Extremely steep "cycle path" wih very tight turns at the top and bottom, leading from the Angel Cycleway onto the East Gateshead Cycleway. No Cycling signs and steps on the obvious alternate route.

Almost impenetrable barrier on link from Wardley to NCN14

Left for The Angel Cycleway Right for ncn15. If you go left and then Gosforth tce you can pick up a link path to rejoin NCN14 at Abbotsford road. Flat and much better in bad weather

A grim and anti accessibility barrier

A random and awful barrier in the path.

The Angel Cycleway path is not great through Wrekenton and this is one of the better bits

For The Angel Cycleway, turn left onto the path beside the radio mast

An old but still awful A frame. Surface quite worn. Then straight over Old Durham road for The Angel Cycleway

For The Angel Cycleway turn left of Whitehill drive and take to the paths across White Hill. The tarmac runs out here

The Angel Cycleway is left onto Whitehill drive.

If you're following The Angel Cycleway then it's easy to miss this sign pointing to the right

The Angel Cycleway takes a left and joins the road here

The Angel Cycleway as it crosses High Lanes. A slightly poor crossing.

The Angel Cycleway though Felling. A nice smooth and wide tarmac path.

A high underpass below the A184 The Angel Cycleway is straight on.

Left to Bowes railway path RCR11 Straight ahead to East Gateshead and Washington Right for The Angel Cycleway to Wrekenton

Crossing the A185. Pelaw Metro is straight over as is The Angel Cycleway

Narrow, overgrown, muddy path with bad signposting and a barrier that would restrict non-standard cycles. Path is only a hundred metres or so but this isn’t clear on entry and forward visibility is very poor.

The start of the path from Leam Lane to Springwell. Don't get excited, the tarmac doesn't last long!

Enormous sign to warn cyclists joining shared-use footway?

Poor surface on downhill section of shared-use footway/cycleway, not helped by footway parkers such as the van driver seen leaving.

Sign obscured by overhanging branches at toucan crossing.

Southbound cyclists cross at split toucan. Dog-walker illustrates width of shared-use footway/cycleway.

Cycle parking for the Angel of the North, with refreshments!

Apparently those cycling to Newcastle and Gateshead need to join the carriageway (bus lane for some distance) here. Others can stay on the shared-use footway. A thoughtfully positioned sign for pedestrians.

A choice of shared footway or bus lane.

Shared footway/cycleway crossing track.

Cycleway crossing busy dual carriageway next to roundabout without any assistance.

Cycleway crossing busy dual carriageway next to roundabout without any assistance.

Route sign for NCN725, the Great North Cycleway, southbound, and for Wrekenton straight ahead along the B1296. But an arrow directs cyclists onto the carriageway when the footway at least as far as the bus stop in #71179 is shared-use.

Shared-use footway around roundabout. "Great North Cycleway - Cycle route joins footway" - in as much as there was a footway to join. The jogger came along the grass verge. Interesting variance between the vehicle restriction signs fo ... [more]

A bus shelter on the shared-use footway on the new alignment of Long Bank.

A gate across the abandoned road alignment. There's a gap at the side for walkers and bikes.

Path meets abandoned road alignment.

If you don't like the barriers in #71175, there is also the option of taking the stairs to the Bowes Railway Path.

A choice of barriers on the access path from the Bowes Railway Path.

Path junction with Bowes Railway Path

The Bowes Railway Path under the A1 dual carriageway no less, in a poor condition on all counts.

Steps up to Long Bank, in reasonably good condition compared to the surrounding infrastructure.

Due to the low bridges, horse-riders need to dismount. I noticed that at the similar sign on the other side of the low bridges that there was a concrete block to assist riders dismounting. But on this side it is too overgrown to get to.

Poor quality surface on the Bowes Railway Path.

A very poor quality cycle path.

The Bowes Railway Path is in a very poor condition. The ramp to Newcastle Bank has a step at the end where it hasn't been tied into the main path properly.

The off-ramp from the Bowes Railway Path to Newcastle Bank.

Crossing point on Newcastle Bank for going left towards the Angle of the North, or right for the Bowes Railway Path.

Sign obscured by tree, and crossing point to go back to the Bowes Railway Path (see #71016) or to take the off-road path towards the Harlow Green roundabout.

Overgrown steps down to the Bowes Railway Path, signed as a pedestrian access. Anyone not wishing to use this needs to cross the main road for the ramp.

Right turns onto the Bowes Railway Path are to be made by continuing up Newcastle Bank to the traffic island (see #71018).

Painted cycle lane, and some footway parking.

Despite the painted cycle lane having finished on the approach to the pinch-point, these cyclists haven't reached their destination, so need to bravely carry on where the cycle lane does not go!

Despite this dead-end road being massively wide, motorists are still choosing to park their vehicles on or obstructing the footway!

Painted cycle lanes end on approach to pinch-point.
